Problems of deviation are always at the centre of attention of a drilling company. To prevent a borehole from taking the shape of a corkscrew, a stabilizer is used in the drilling sheath that helps maintain drilling straightness.
A stabilizer consists of a sleeve, immobilized while the mandrel rotates with the drillstring. The mandrel is a mechanical part attached to the drill pipe of a rotary machine to which a drilling tool may be rapidly attached.
A sheath with a stabilizer judiciously integrated inside the drill pipe string can provide a slight inclination to the bore.
There are three stabilizer systems currently in use.
